TRAVELING WATERSHED
Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh; and traveling throughout Scotland
1998-1999
Glass, etched aluminum, water collected from Edinburgh and Central Pennsylvania
Two cases, one 28 feet wide x 36 feet tall x 4 inches deep,
the other 34 feet wide x 43 feet tall x 4 inches deep
Commissioned by the Society of Scottish Artists for the 104th Annual Exhibition
One case of bottles contains a water sample from all the burns, firths and lochs of Edinburgh’s watershed. The other case contains water from streams, rivers, and reservoirs around the artist’s studio in Central Pennsylvania. Each bottle was sandblasted with the name of the waterway from which it was collected. Traveling in Scotland and across the Atlantic, the boxes can be shut to become suitcases for the watersheds.
